ONE in five people in the North-East fail to take a single lunch break during the working week, according to a national heart charity.

The British Heart Foundation said its latest workplaces survey show employees are often let down by bosses who don’t prioritise their well-being and check they get the breaks they are entitled to.

The BHF survey shows nearly one in six workers in the region do no physical activity during working hours and a third only manage up to 20 minutes or less during the entire working day.

The charity has released the results ahead of its National Heart Month to encourage people to sign up to their free Health at Work programme.

Lisa Purcell, project manager for the BHF’s Health at Work programme, said: “Our survey found that the majority of workers think their bosses are responsible for health in the workplace.

“We spend 60 per cent of our day at work and it’s time for employers to make health and well-being an essential part of the working day.”
