MOTORISTS are being urged to drive with extreme care on the A66 between Bowes and Brough.

The snow gates were re-opened today (Tuesday) after gritters and snow ploughs had cleared the route, but officers from Durham's Road Policing Unit, said caution was still needed.

Freezing fog and mist is forecast for the area again today (Wednesday, January 23) with temperatures predicted to plummet to -5C overnight into Thursday.

PC Gary Emerson, who was on patrol near Bowes yesterday (Tuesday, January 22), said: “Although the road has re-opened, the weather conditions can change on this stretch within the hour.

“Drivers need to be aware of banks of freezing fog.”

He added: “I would urge motorists to check all their lights are working before they set off and once they are one the road, make sure the switch them on.”
