ONLY one project in the North East has been awarded a share of Arts Council money in the latest round of capital funding announcements.

The National Glass Centre in Sunderland has been given £750,000 towards the refurbishment and re-modelling of the building, making it the only scheme in the region to receive a share of the capital grant money.

York Theatre Royal has been given £211,932 to develop its second stage application, meaning it now has 18 months to work on more detailed plans to secure the £2.9m it has bid for.

A £10m bid from Gateshead Council to build an annexe at the Sage music centre has made it through the first stage of the application process, but will have to successfully complete a second stage before being awarded a capital grant.

Projects in Halifax and Wakefield were successful in securing grants and London fared well with six venues winning money, including the National Theatre which received £17.5m and the Royal Opera House which got £10m.

Nationally, the North West was the most successful region, with 34 per cent of all funding in this latest round being allocated  there.
