THE devastated family of a 27-year-old man killed in a hit-and-run crash have said that he "leaves a gap in our lives that no-one else can fill."

Police tonight named him as Douglas Scott Robertson of Stokesley, North Yorkshire.

He died after a silver Range Rover hit him after it careered off the town's North Road. It smashed through a wall and a lamppost before pinning him against the wall of a derelict building.

It happened on Saturday lunchtime - at around 12.20pm - as Mr Robertson was walking into town from his nearby home.

His mother Jean North said: “My son Douglas was kind and clever, intelligent and shy.

"He was Tracey’s big brother and her best friend. He will be missed by his family and friends and leaves a gap in our lives that no-one else can fill.

"We can’t believe he has been taken from us.”

Leaflets appealing for help from anyone who thinks they may have information about the tragedy are being handed out across Stokesley by the local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal has thanked the local community for their patience, support and understanding.

He said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Mr Robertson’s family and friends.

“I also want the local community to know how much we appreciate their support and co-operation as we continue to investigate this terrible incident, which has shocked and distressed many local people.

“We know how this type of incident can affect a small and usually peaceful community like Stokesley and appreciate that at times like this, reassurance is paramount.

"We have therefore arranged for the local Safer Neighbourhood Team to be supported by resources from around the force to maintain a high visibility presence in the area."

Two teenagers, aged 15 and 18, arrested by police in connection with the crash remain in custody.
