HAMBLETON District Council is set to spend £15,500 to impose increased car parking charges across the area and change time limits at one car park in Northallerton.

There was a storm of protest among traders and residents last year after reports that car parking charges could be increased by up to 100 per cent.

In December however councillors instead agreed increases of between 25 and 30 per cent with charges going up by up to 50p a day in some towns where all day parking will be £2 from April.

Members of the council’s cabinet, who meets tomorrow (Tuesday, January 22) are being told software and signs will need to be changed to bring in the new charges, along with new machines introduced at the Forum car park in Northallerton.

This will cost £15,500. Next year the authority expects to raise £250,700 through car parking compared to £162,000 in 2012/2013.
