SCHOOL children in Darlington are to be given an insight into what it is like to be in a wheelchair.

An awareness day aims to give children in wheelchairs more confidence and independence.

The event, at Reid Street School, on Thursday, January 24, is being run by the national children’s charity Go Kids Go.

The course will help students realise some of the difficulties experienced by young wheelchair users.

They will have the opportunity to try out wheelchair sports and dance, while covering issues on personal space and assisting wheelchair-users.

Go Kids Go has been running wheelchair skills training since 1990.

TV presenter Ade Adepitan learnt wheelchair skills with the charity as a young man, along with Paralympian athlete David Anthony.

The staff of Glaxo Smith Kline Ltd at Barnard Castle have made a charitable contribution to this training day and another one being held at Hurworth Primary School.
