ANIMAL lovers are being urged to remember the plight of abandoned and unwanted dogs this Valentine’s Day.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, a charity which has a centre at Catton, near Thirsk, wants people to donate a shoebox full of doggie treats as part of its Love Us, Love Our Dogs campaign.

The charity, which has five centres, is looking to rehome around 150 abandoned and unwanted dogs, all of whom need food and shelter as well as toys and the occasional treat.

And all the items donated will be given to the dogs to enjoy while Jerry Green Dog Rescue looks for a suitable new home for them.

Head of fund-raising Catherine Foster said: “Around Valentine’s Day we all like to make a loved one feel special, and by spending just a few pounds you can make our dogs feel truly loved.

“We’re asking dog lovers to help mend a broken heart by filling a shoebox with delicious treats and exciting toys for the dogs in our care.

“We would welcome donations of dog biscuits, gravy bones, chews, kongs – anything that will help our dogs to enjoy the time they spend with us.”

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, which was founded in 1961, rescues, cares for and rehomes abandoned and unwanted dogs and undertakes never to put a dog down unless its health or temperament make such a move the kindest option.
