HUNDREDS of students have been offered a taste of the new skills they could develop after leaving school to help them secure a good job.

Darlington College opened its doors to show young people a glimpse of student life.

Many took advantage of the opportunity to have a go at a range of activities from television and media, plumbing and electrical wiring to catering, hair and beauty.

Backed by the national apprenticeship organisation World Skills UK and the European Social Fund, the three hour event also provided a chance to talk to lecturers, current students and enrol on a host of courses designed to maximise their future prospects.

Darlington College’s assistant director of student recruitment and marketing Andrea Waller said she was delighted with the turnout and how many students signed up for courses.

“We are fortunate at Darlington College in that we can offer the full range of courses, whether that is academic or vocational skills that will help young people secure employment,” she added.

“The have-a-go tasters proved really popular and gave students an insight into what they will learn at college and the skills they will carry over into the workplace.”
