WORK has started on a £1.9m housing development which is designed to help people onto the property ladder.

The Vela Group, which includes Housing Hartlepool and Tristar Homes, is transforming the site of a former nursing home that will see 22 two and three bedroom homes developed in Monmouth Grove, Throston.

The development is expected to be completed by next August and will include homes on affordable rent, market rent and a rent-to-buy basis, giving residents the option to become home owners as their financial circumstances improve.

Sarah Fawcett, head of development at the Vela Group said: “Vela is committed to helping people struggling to get access to good quality homes in a variety of occupancies. This development will offer some flexibility to people looking to rent or buy a home from us.

“The development will also enhance the neighbourhood by transforming an unsightly, empty piece of land into an area boasting modern, stylish homes.”

The land was sold to the Vela Group by Hartlepool Borough Council earlier this year.

Mayor of Hartlepool, Councillor Stuart Drummond, said: “The council is keen to play a role in helping to increase the provision of good quality, affordable housing for local people.

“Working closely with Vela and local developers is one way of meeting the town’s housing shortage.”
