Civic champion: A plaque is to be installed in Blake Street, York to honour one of the city’s most popular figures, conservation champion John Shannon. Mr Shannon, who died in 2010, aged 92, played a leading role in many organisations, but is most remembered as the chairman of the York Civic Trust, achieving international recognition for his work in preserving the city’s heritage.
