Young runners win cross country trophies

SPORTING youngsters have been named as cross country champions after they clinched two trophies at a race meeting.

Pupils from Teesdale School, Barnard Castle, took part in the Area Cross Country Championships.

The school’s intermediate boys team won its team race for the second year running.

The pupils in the school’s intermediate girls team were joint winners of their team race with Barnard Castle School.

Amongst the runners were Shona Haston who finished second, Millie Diment who was seventh and Sam Griffin who came in third in the boy’s race.

The race meeting saw 12 out of Teesdale School’s 30 athletes also qualify for the County Championship to be held in the new year.

The qualified runners are Caitlin Wearmouth, Nick Hamilton, Ben Lambert, Shona Haston, Millie Diment, Amy Foster, Hannah Brass, Lily Fox, Sam Griffin, Ali Haston, Billy Cassidy and Jack Walker.

Jean Brennan, head of PE and sport, said: “I am extremely proud of all the students who took part.

“The conditions were poor and all students competed with determination and resilience.

“I am absolutely delighted by the number who qualified for the next round of competition and the PE staff wish them every success.”
