SOROPTIMISTS in Darlington have backed efforts to reduce the devastating effect of cluster bombs in parts of the developing world.

At their recent meeting, members of Soroptimist International of Darlington and District watched a DVD on the issue.

The DVD was provided by Handicap International, which is aiming to raise awareness of the weapons.

Members of the group have all signed letters urging the Cambodian government to sign up to an international convention making such munitions illegal.

The letters were delivered on Monday (December 3), the international day of persons with disabilities.

Soroptimist Alma Bailey said: “Last year we supported the campaign against banks investing in companies producing cluster munitions. This has produced some good results.

“We are glad to have the chance to support Handicap International again in their current campaign”.
