A THREE-year £115,000 project to build new headquarters for Barnard Castle District Guides has been completed.
The complex, in Birch Road, was officially opened by Councillor James Rowlandson and replaces an old wooden hut.
The new HQ has a large main room, smaller meeting room, spacious kitchen plus toilets and showers with disabled facilities.
The architect was George Stastny; the builder, Paul Ridsdale; the electrician, John Bousfield and the plumber, Martin Rain.
Hazel Yeadon, fundraising team leader for the project, said the new facilities were already proving popular with the Guides.
“The girls were amazed. After meeting at Green Lane School during the build, there were six new recruits for the Brownies on the first night.
“They loved the space and the huge kitchen, compared to the previous one, and said it will be great for cooking activities and ideal for when they have sleepovers.”
She said Barnard Castle District paid tribute to all the funders and numerous local companies, organisations and individuals who helped during the project.
“It has been a real community effort to support a community group and they are delighted that there is now a permanent home for Girlguiding in Barnard Castle,” she said.
