HUNDREDS of books will be sent to a girls school in one of the poorest parts of Africa after a fundraising effort by a Darlington organisation.

The Darlington Lions Club, which runs its own bookshop in Blackwellgate Mews, has donated 500 books to the to Edinburgh Girls High school in northern Malawi, which has pupils from pre-school to 18.

The club is working with colleagues in Edinburgh Lions Club to support the school and the books, and other equipment, will be taken to Malawi by lorry in the coming weeks.

Robert Hillary, chairman of the Darlington Lions Club bookshop, drove to Alnwick to meet with Andrew Sutherland, President of Edinburgh Lions Club, to deliver the books.

The Lions aim to promote reading in people of all ages, and the Darlington Lions Club has joined an international effort to support children and adults worldwide as part of the Reading Active programme.
