LABOUR'S Andy McDonald won a resounding victory in the Middlesbrough by-election this morning.

He secured 10,201 votes, ahead of UKIP candidate Richard Elvin in second with 1,990 and Liberal Democrat George Selmer with 1,672.

Conservative candidate Ben Houchen came fourth with 1,063 votes, only three ahead of Imdad Hussain for the Peace Party.

The BNP's Peter Foreman won 328 votes ahead of John Malcolm for the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition with 277 and independent Mark Heslehurst with 275.

The turnout was just 25 per cent – less than half the number who voted in the 2010 general election.

In his victory speech, Mr McDonald said: "I feel so proud to represent the town I was born and brought up in.

"I promise to fight for all of the people who live here. The people of the town have spoken.

"Tonight we have a new voice in Westminster and I shall make it loud and clear."

Labour's majority of 48.68 per cent was well up on the 26 per cent margin recorded in 2010 by Sir Stuart Bell, whose death triggered the contest.

The blonde lady is his wife Sally, a very nice lady & Mr McDonald cannot possible do any worse than Stuart Bell. Cllr Shamal Biswas standing behind her chaired only 3 of the 6 Staff Appeals committee meetings in the last council year, but claimed the full £6,100 extra for this position. that means he charted the tax payer of Mbro over £2,000 for each meeting. That's why they vote Labour in Mbro - they like giving their money away like this.

Despite labour being on the streets morning till night for the last two weeks, Andy polled the lowest vote for Labort in the history of the town with less than 25 in every 100 bothering to go out and vote for him. However, I wish him well as the town needed someone to replace Bell - let's face it, by simply holding surgeries in the town is an improvement on the last one.

looneyleft - I suggest you get some English lessons from someone before you post on here again - youre's !!! Does your computer not have spell check? it's one thing to make a typo but another to use such dreadful punctuation. Then again under Labour, look what's happened to the education system in this country. Thousands of children from all over the world were sent here to be educated - foreigners working here now send their children home to be educated until they leave the country themselves. You don't even write in sentences.

dierdre, the tories were in favour of relaxing controls on banking even further, so if Brown had brought in new restrictions ,Osbourne would have probably changed them back. by the way you are doing an excellent job correcting my spelling are you ex-teacher ,this is a good way of keeping your hand in ,can i have some homework?

DIERDRE,did you ever attend charm school.,i bet your husband enjoys his time down the pub.The tories didn't get the chance to relax even further controls on the banks,because they collapsed and labour had to rescue them, so bow down and be grateful,else you would be eating out of a bin now.
