FESTIVE EVENT: North Stainley, near Ripon, is holding its first Christmas Fayre in the village hall on Saturday, December 8, from 10am to 12.30pm. It will feature children singing carols and a selection of local handmade crafts, food and festive wreaths.

DANCE NIGHT: Sowerby Parochial Hall will host a sequence dancing evening with raffle to raise funds for Arthritis Research on Saturday, December 8, from 7.30pm to 11pm. Visitors are invited to take a food and drinks contribution to a pooled supper. Entry costs £3. For details, call 01845 523743.

SEASONAL FAIR: Thirsk’s Christmas Fayre will be held from today, Novermber 30 to Sunday, (December 2), in the Market Place, Golden Fleece and the Town Hall. The event will raise funds for the town’s Christmas lights, which will be switched on tonight, at 6pm, followed by late night shopping.

TREES DISPLAY: St Mary’s Church, in Thirsk, will hold a Christmas Wonderland tree exhibition from Saturday, (December 1) until Sunday, December 9, from 10am to 4pm, except on Sundays when it is open noon to 4pm. Entry is free, but donations will be welcomed. The Archdeacon of Cleveland, Paul Ferguson, will perform an organ recital at the exhibition on Monday, (December 3) from 12.15pm to 12.45pm.

LOCAL SHOTS: Ritz Cinema, in Thirsk, will screen a selection of films introduced by staff from the Yorkshire Film Archives, who will talk about the collection, on Friday, December 7, from 7.30pm. The films will feature the area from Thirsk to the North York Moors. Entry costs £5, and £4 for under-15s and seniors. For details, call 01845 524751.

QUESTION TIME: Thirsk Garden Centre hosts a quiz every Thursday, from 2pm to 3.30pm. Entry costs 50p, which is donated to charity.
