The Highways Agency is continuing to urge road users in the North East and North Yorkshire to consider whether their journey is necessary before attempting to travel this afternoon. Work is continuing to clear a number of localised flooding incidents on the A19 (Thirsk to Seaton Burn), the A66 at Ravensworth and the A1 at Catterick. Pumps have also been deployed this afternoon to areas previously affected by flooding run-off from adjacent fields, including the A1 at Hackforth, as a preventative measure. Various lane and slip road closures remain in place on all these routes while this work is ongoing, and long delays are possible. Further overnight closures will be required on the A66 at Ravensworth, North Yorkshire, for repair work to the carriageway following damage caused by flooding. The A66 at Long Newton - between Darlington and Stockton - which had been closed due to flooding, was fully reopened to traffic this afternoon. North Yorkshire Police is also advising of delays on the local road network, particularly around Pickering, Norton and Malton.

RIVER SKERNE, DARLINGTON
THE water level of the River Skerne in Darlington is at its highest and should start to fall, an expert has said.
Ian Hodge, area manager for the Environment Agency, who is in Darlington this afternoon, said officials were watching water levels carefully and monitoring potential showers this afternoon.
However, he said he expected to see the water level of the Skerne begin to drop shortly.
Two flood warnings remain on the river and households in the Victoria Embankment and John Street areas of the town have been anxiously watching the river in case it burst its banks.
1:06pm
EAST COAST TRAINS
Shortly after midday, East Coast was able to run a limited service between York and Newcastle and two trains an hour were operating between London and Edinburgh, via York, Darlington and Newcastle.
The company warned passengers to expect extended journey times this afternoon due to speed restrictions in place at locations between York and Durham.
By noon today, the AA had attended more than 5,000 breakdowns, including 118 incidents of cars being driven through, or stuck in, flood water.
Worse-affected areas were north east England and Essex. The AA said that drivers in Wales, where flooding has been severe, appeared to have heeded warnings about travel, as there had been few call-outs for patrol teams.
