Witness plea over Darlington car crash

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a car crashed into a tree in Darlington late last night.

The accident happened on Carmel Road North at 11.48pm when the driver of a BMW 335 lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

Durham Police said the car was overtaking other vehicles at the time.

The driver, the sole occupant, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses are asked to contact Acting Sergeant Kevin Salter of the roads policing unit on 101.

So no, most us won't be in this situation, as anyone who's a full shilling knows you just don't drive like that and expect to stay injury-free.

He was reported as overtaking, maybe he wasn't- perhaps the Echo got the facts wrong. Or perhaps he was overtaking a milk float. He may have skidded on ice doing 15 mph. His steering or brakes could have failed. Who knows?

There was a recent item on the Echo reporting a cyclist who was killed on McMullen road. The first comment was questioning what he was doing "cycling on the road when there was a cycle path there", and was followed by many other trolling-type hateful comments from people who had a grudge to bear against cyclists.

It soon became apparent though that he had been hit by a car on a crossing, and not while "cycling on the road".

So let's let the Police investigate this accident here- not anonymous keyboard warriors.

Some of the comments left on here are shocking, I really do hope his family do not read them. Irrelevant of the chain of events fingers crossed he pulls through. It would be interesting to know how many people who are leaving the shocking comments would actually say it to the fellas face if he were stood in front of them. I know the answer to that…..ZERO.

They would ask for witnesses maybe to back up a witness they already have?

On the other hand, if it was a steering or braking fault they probably wouldn't be asking for witnesses, as a mechanical failure is easy to discover.

Please don't assume I am full of hate, I am nothing of the sort. I don't know this lad, I wish him a speedy recovery but just hope he learns from it.

I don't see why the police would say he was overtaking if he wasn't.

Ok, so some of the comments on here are uncalled for and I do hope the driver gets better but as for "accidents happen", they sometimes only happen at the recklessness of some people.

I do not know the facts but if the facts are that he was over taking other cars, then it was his fault (not saying he deserved this though). It was just lucky that it was a single vehicle collision and no innocent party were involved. His actions (if he was at fault) could have caused someone else so much pain.

Its not about who is right or who is wrong old giffer. It's about showing respect and giving people the benefit of the doubt before we know the full facts. "Gossip" can lead to all sorts of problems as we'll all have fallen victim to that in the past. If the poor lad is guilty of anything then let him pay the consequences, but when people write disgusting comments as "How is the tree?" they're beneath contempt. Even if the lad has done something wrong he's still someones son, brother dad? They have feelings too !
