A CELEBRATION of culture and diversity is set to move to a new home as its success continues to grow.

The Middlesbrough Mela is moving to a new venue in the town’s Centre Square from next year.

The multicultural festival draws huge crowds from Teesside and across the region to enjoy a mix of live music, delicious foods from around the world and craft and fashion stalls.

Heavy rain led to this year’s event moving to Centre Square from its current home in Albert Park, and the Mela Management Committee has now taken the decision to make the move permanent.

Mela committee chairman Naveed Hussain said: “The Middlesbrough Mela continues to go from strength to strength and I am sure that Centre Square will prove to be a great new home.

“We now have an exciting challenge ahead of us, but I am confident we can look forward to welcoming record crowds to next year’s event.”

From next year, and for the next three years, the Middlesbrough Mela will also take place slightly earlier than in recent years to accommodate Ramadan. The 2013 event will be held on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.
