STRUM: Ukuleles on the Wensleydale Railway
A DALES-based ukulele ensemble travelled on a heritage railway and entertained at a festive lunch.
A group of walkers organised by the Wensleydale Railway met up at Leyburn station then made their way to Redmire for lunch at the Bolton Arms.
Fourteen ukulele players and their partners – who had travelled on the Wensleydale Railway from Leeming Bar – joined them at lunch and then followed up with a concert. The musicians – named the Uketopians – include members of the Northallerton Music Centre and the Crakehall based Dales Ukulele Club.
Spokesman Dave Bentley said: “We play jazz, swing, pop, country and even punk and reggae songs. Indeed, nothing is sacred.”
Event organisor Ruth Annison said: “ A train journey from Leeming Bar to Leyburn provided the start to a lovely day of walking and music in Wensleydale.
“Once again the railway proved its worth in bringing business into the dale outside the main holiday season.
“It was such a good day out that we have already booked to go again next year. We can also recommend the ukulele playing of the Uketopians – everyone was tapping their fingers and feet.”
