SEVERAL primary schools from across Wensleydale competed in the area crosscountry competition.

Despite a wet day, the races went ahead at the usual venue of Askrigg School.

Organised by Claire Pearson, a teacher at Leyburn Primary School, races for years three and four followed a course inside the school grounds.

Years five and six had to cover a more gruelling 1½-mile outside the school.

The older children’s race was led by a “hare” in the person of Major Bruce Radbourne of the Parachute Regiment with Ms Pearson following at the rear encouraging stragglers.

Leyburn School won three of the four team competitions with Reeth and Gunnerside successful in the fourth. Leyburn’s runners secured first place in three races.

Ms Pearson said: “Thanks go to Major Radbourne for leading the race and all the other parents who helped. In spite of the rain all the children showed great determination and a competitive spirit.”
