A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl was sprayed with glass after yobs threw bricks from a bridge over a dual carriageway and shattered the windscreen of her father's car.

Police are warning those responsible for throwing missiles off a bridge over the A174 that they are taking the incident extremely seriously and that somebody could have been killed.

Officers received reports at around 5pm yesterday that missiles had been thrown off the Church Lane footbridge at Normanby, over the A174.

The man and his daughter were covered in glass when the windscreen of their blue BMW was hit as they travelled towards Redcar.

The girl was taken to see medical staff in Redcar to be checked over as a precaution.

A green Vauxhall Corsa was hit but luckily the female driver was uninjured. A blue Ford Fiesta was also hit by a missile and a female passenger, who was injured by glass, was taken to James Cook University Hospital and later released.

Extra patrols will be carried out in the area and police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anything around the time of the incident that they think will help with enquiries.

Sgt Lois Speakman, from Eston Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "I would like to send a strong message to those responsible that we will not tolerate these despicable and highly dangerous acts; we will do everything possible to bring you to justice.

"It has been a frightening ordeal for the victims involved, a small child was covered in glass and it is by luck that nothing more serious happened.

"We do need help from members of the public and are appealing for them to come forward with any information they have."

Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
