A COUNCILLOR has been arrested in connection with the harassment of a candidate in the upcoming Middlesbrough by-election.
Joan McTigue, who represents the Beechwood Ward, was arrested today on suspicion of harassment of Mark Heslehurst, an independent Labour by-election candidate.
The 67-year-old Independent, confirmed her arrest when contacted by The Northern Echo.
She said she had posted comments online about Mr Heslehurst and initially claimed to have made a counter harrassment claim against him.
The Northern Echo wishes to make clear that Cleveland Police have received no such complaint.
A spokeswoman from Cleveland Police said: “A 67-year-old woman from Middlesbrough has been arrested on suspicion of harassment and enquiries are ongoing.”
Mrs McTigue was bailed pending further police inquiries.
