A CARE home has rolled back the years to help residents remember the past.

Staff at Springfield Care Home, in Wylam Avenue, Darlington, have put together a 1940s-themed reminiscence room to benefit residents who suffer from memory problems.

The home cares for 30 people, whose conditions range from memory loss to more advanced dementia.

Personal activities leader Mags Avey said: “The room allows them to relax and reminisce. The aim is to give them the feeling of almost being back at home."

The objects in the room include an old-fashioned bureau and a dressing table with feather boas and brooches. There is also a knitting corner and a war years music soundtrack.

Mrs Avey said the intention was to give residents the chance to engage with their surroundings.

She said: “In the past they were always busy and they still like to be busy.

"The room is calming them down if they’re agitated and it does trigger their memory when they see old things.”
