Sam, 11, helps British Legion appeal
1:03pm Monday 12th November 2012 in News
A YOUNGSTER was among the older military veterans taking part in this year’s Poppy Appeal.
Collecting for the Royal British Legion’s annual appeal in Leyburn was 11-yearold Sam Radbourne.
Accompanied by his father, Bruce, who is a serving soldier, Sam braved the cold selling poppies proudly wearing a Parachute Regiment T-shirt, which is his father’s regiment.
Sam, who attended Leyburn School, became involved in collecting following the death of his friend, Tony Metcalfe of Preston-under-Scar. Mr Metcalfe had always suggested he took over from him.
He said: “I did it for the first time last year, when my friend Tony Metcalfe, who used to collect, died and I took his place.”
Proud father Mr Radbourne said: “Most people are very pleased to see him as they like to see a young person out collecting. He is very popular and has collected more than me.”
