MORE candidates have declared their ambition to become Middlesbrough’s next MP.

The by-election has been triggered by the death of veteran Labour MP Sir Stuart Bell and will be held on Thursday, November 29.

Labour has held the seat ever since it was recreated as a constituency in 1974 and Labour's candidate is local solicitor Andy McDonald.

Ben Houchen, a solicitor who is also a Stockton borough councillor, said: “Being born and bred here I really relish the opportunity to campaign for the community that has given me so much during my life.  It’s a dream come true to be selected as the candidate for my home town.

“I believe I can offer the people of Middlesbrough something different.  For too long Labour has taken the town for granted. “

Meanwhile the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition has announced John Malcolm, a mental health nurse, will stand for election as its candidate.

Mr Malcolm said he would only take the average wage of a skilled worker if he was elected.

Previously the Liberal Democrats have chosen Middlesbrough-born George Selmer, who says he has devoted his life to getting people back to work. The Peace Party have chosen Imdad Hussain and Richard Elvin will stand for UKIP.
