Elderly support organisation asks for volunteer help

A NORTH-EAST organisation offering vital support to vulnerable residents has appealed for more volunteer drivers.
The Durham Social Resource Centre provides transport for elderly people across East Durham and Sedgefield to make health appointments.
The scheme relies on around 160 volunteers, many who are retired or unemployed, but bosses have revealed more are needed to cope with a soaring demand from residents.
Rose Thompson, head of transport service, said the organisation, which works in partnership with Durham County Council, Darlington Borough Council and County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trust, was a valuable part of many people’s lives.
She said: “Becoming a volunteer driver gives people more self-respect and a real purpose in making other people's lives that little bit easier.
“Our drivers are a great part of the team and their hard work is very much appreciated and valued.”
Anyone interested in becoming a driver will be given full training and learn skills to help get back into employment.
