Art project by Vic Reeves lights up York
COMEDIAN and artist Vic Reeves faced tough questions at the launch of his latest art project in York - from his twin daughters, Lizzie and Nell.
The Leeds-born performer who grew up in Darlington, has unleashed his "absurd and magical" creations in Museum Gardens for this year's £500,000 Illuminating York festival.
At tonight's "switch-on" ahead of the public opening tomorrow (Wednesday, October 31) Vic - who uses his real name Jim Moir when out of comic mode - made the preview a family affair, bringing along wife Nancy Sorrell and his four children, the twins, 19-year-old Alice and Louis, 15.
The twins were eager to ask their dad questions, like "Do you like the pictures on the building?"at a Q&A session.
Moir's reply was "Yes" although he did express surprise at seeing his face projected larger than life on the front of the Yorkshire Museum.
He was given a free hand to create artwork for Vic Reeves - Wonderland. He also provided the music to go with large scale animated projections bringing 21st century technology to the ancient site .
"Art should be fun," said Moir.
"It was my first exploration into doing stuff on computers which I am really rubbish with. I did the drawings, photographed them and then put them into the iPad and used that to colour them in so I got the colours I wanted.
"But my favourite thing to do is paint with oils because I have more control."
He may be serious about his art but his now-animated drawings, display the trademark surreal humour familiar from his double act with Bob Mortimer.
This year's Illuminating York lets visitors explore and participate as they wander round the newly created Wonderland filling ten acres of Museum Gardens. They can even create a dance for projection on the ruins of St Mary's Abbey.
Vic Reeves - Wonderland continues until Saturday (Nov 3) from 6.30-10.30pm. Adults £5, under fives free, six-16 £1. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
