Crime commissioner candidate hits the road

ELECTION CANDIDATE: Kingsley Smith ELECTION CANDIDATE: Kingsley Smith

A CANDIDATE for the crime commissioner role in the Durham Police force area has taken to the road in his 'vote mobile'.

Independent candidate Kingsley Smith aims to cover an average of 100 miles a day in his battle bus as he canvasses for votes in the November 15 election.

Mr Smith said: "We hope to take the van to every corner of County Durham and Darlington so we can talk directly to people about the importance of an independent commissioner and to give them the opportunity to question us directly about their priorities and concerns."

Labour's candidate for the role in County Durham and Darlington is Ron Hogg, while Nick Varley is standing for the Conservatives and Michael Costello for the UK Independence Party.

I've had a look at the candidates policies on the web. Quite honestly I want none of them.

The function of elected commissioners is to make the police service more accountable to the citizens not go off in Daily Mail/Express inspired rants.

I want to know how any of them will put police on the beat at night where they are needed. I want to know if they will stop using resources to chase those who are not doing any harm to anyone while leaving the yob and the thief alone. I

f they want an example of that they need only look in the current edition of the Echo to see a headline shouting with glee about police raids on pubs. Presumably large numbers of people quietly enjoying each other's company had their evening disrupted. Not to mention the landlords who would see their business disrupted.

Kingsley Smith never achieved anything when he was Chief Executive at Durham County Council and many of his colleagues used to laugh at him behind his back so lets hope he fails in his attempt to be Crime Commissioner.
I wonder who is funding his campaign because I doubt he would risk his own money from his gold plated Council pension to put up the £5,000 deposit or fund a van!

Perhaps we should vote UKIP for the position of Crime Commissioner.

I can't see it making much difference who wins as to the way police forces are run but the issue of EU membership needs to be decided one way or the other and a strong UKIP showing would certainly give the other parties something to think about.
