York scientist receives award for developing microscope
A YORK scientist has been presented with an award for women in science after modifying a microscope to advance medicine and the discovery of energy sources.
Professor Pratibha Gai – a professor of chemistry and physics at the University of York - was named the 2013 European Laureate at the 15th annual United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) awards, sponsored by L’Oreal.
Prof Gai joins five women scientists from around the world – one on each continent – who will be recognised for their contribution to science at a ceremony in Paris in March next year.
The $100,000 award celebrates outstanding achievements of women in science and is recognised as one of the premier international science awards.
Prof Gai was chosen for modifying her electron microscope so she was able to observe chemical reactions occurring at surface atoms of catalysts - which will help scientists develop new medicines and energy sources.
