No-one will be left unaffected by Middlesbrough Council's £11m spending cuts, warns Mayor Ray Mallon

Warning: Ray Mallon Warning: Ray Mallon

NO-ONE in Middlesbrough will remain unaffected by £11m worth of savage budget cuts, mayor Ray Mallon has warned.

More than 200 jobs will be lost and many public services – including those supporting the disabled,  elderly and children – will lose vital funding under the budget proposals.

At a meeting of Middlesbrough Council last night (Monday, October 22), Mayor Mallon proposed cuts to 111 services as part of a package designed to save £11m in 2013/14.

He also predicted a further £2-3m of cuts will be announced by December.

“These cuts will affect every citizen, whatever their means and whatever their status," he said. "No-one will be immune.”

As part of the cuts, Ayresome Industries - a factory employing disabled workers to produce UPVC goods - will close, as will Hemlington Library and Sunningdale Mental Health Residential Home.

The Shopmobility scheme will also be axed while charities across the town will have funding reduced together with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

Mr Mallon criticised the Coalition Government for putting the council in an unenviable position of having to make £50m of cuts over four years to meet its 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review.

He said: “The situation in Middlesbrough is dire. Many people believe cuts could continue for 10 years. There is a lack of empathy towards areas like Middlesbrough and we face many challenges.

“This government do not understand what social deprivation looks like. It is not bricks and mortar, it is people and generational issues.

"They are not showing any empathy or understanding about the issues facing this town as far as social deprivation is concerned. Middlesbrough is a special case, the potency of our deprivation is clear to everybody. We need assistance.

"They cannot just cut us loose and tell us to get on with it. That is just not on.”

Reacting to the proposals, Coun John McPartland said: “It is like being hit by a sledgehammer. We have been placed in this position by a government that does not understand Teesside and does not want to know, or care.

"So many people are going to be affected, including the young, the disabled and the elderly.”

Proposals include:

• Ending funding for Dial-a-Ride transport

• Cutting level and costs of residential placements for looked-after children

• Stopping grants to organisations including Tees Valley Arts, The North of England Refugee Service and the Women’s Support Network

• Ending school clothing grants

• Reducing services that help people in their homes, such as housing wardens and carelink services

• Axing the ‘Teen Mover’ pass for half fares on all bus services

• Reducing spending on Emergency Planning

• Reducing council bus services

• Cutting backon litter picking and street cleaning services

Is this Mallon positioning himself to stand as an Independent in the forthcoming By-Election, perhaps? So soon after being elected Mayor too. Naughty.
Not that he cares much about the Boro, I suspect. He lost a lot of support last year, so perhaps he just thinks he can remain on the MP gravy train for a lot longer than on the Mayoral one.

Brilliant Ray. So what do you suggest? Keep spending..... spending money we haven't got. At least statements like yours will strike a chord with the sort of people who will vote for you and keep you in office with your fat salary and pension.

Exactly David. The headline is misleading. I am quite sure he won't be affected.

I think they should all take a pay cut. And that includes all the wealthy Labour MP's- including your beloved Tony Blair, living in a mansion form the spoils of war. Now there's a man who represents the people...

I think you are forgetting jonny ,Tony Blair is not an m.p. he has nothing to do with the spending cuts Cameron andOsbourne have.Do you think cam and ossie represents anybody except rich friends,it's no use going on about past works of ex politicians, the present problems was caused by Cameron's friends in the banking industry, labour did not over spend the tories spent 18 yrs depriving schools and hospitals of funds and labour was trying to catch up righting that deprivation.

Yep- you're right. Tony got away from politics as soon as he could. He was too keen to spend his new found wealth holidaying on Russian Oligarchs' yachts, or in Silvio Berlusconi's villa. Of course- there's no wealthy Labour politicians are there? They're all "down with the working people"

And thanks for rewriting history. I didn't realise that the present problems were caused by "David Cameron's friends in the banking industry".

You're name says it all.

I mean "your" name. I can't even blame Labour for that- I was at school when the Tories were in power.

We know some labour politicians are wealthy, but they were'nt going to cut spending as deep and as fast as the government are doing which is why the cuts in Middlesborough are so deep so your original point should have directed at the government not Ray Mallon. There are a lot of people at the moment saying why should this group or that group or that person shouldn't have so much money, how would that do any good if everyone was poor ,how would that be any good for the country? Rewring history, so the banks didn't nearly go bankrupt in 2008,then the labour government didn't have to bail out Camerons friends in the banks .the labour government bailed out Camerons friends in the banks now all the government wails about is the debt which was caused by there own backers in the banking industry. i think your user name should be dopey the ridiicuilous comments you come out with.

Er, ok-ay. I think that clears that up then.

you give the impression that if you've got money you should 't support labour,or be a labour m.p. People in the labour movement don't envy people with money,if you've made your fortune honestly thats not a problem,it's people like Mitchell who came from a working class family went up in the world, and now thinks he is better than the people his family has now left behind.
