Winds of change

Sir, - How many crosses do we need in our rural area to mark the death of our beautiful countryside?

I am talking about those monstrous 125-metre-tall metal pillars set to pepper and dominate our landscape.

Did you know the Government has agreed to a programme of renewable energy by 2010 and has produced separate planning guidelines to implement this agreement quickly, riding rough shod over the cautions usually associated with serious sensitive applications, although all bodies concerned are given the opportunity to express their professional views.

My worry is that in rushing ahead with plans to industrialise our countryside with wind turbines, we forget there are alternatives.

Why should we copy the mistakes of Germany and Denmark, which are no longer promoting their onshore wind turbine programme because, unfortunately, after many years and with all the wind in the world, they have only managed to produce five per cent of their energy from wind.

I am all in favour of solving our electricity problems in an environmentally-friendly way.

Therefore I am happy to have them a hundred miles offshore, in numbers that are viable, if this also provides vitally-needed jobs in our area.

But let us remember the saying - more haste less speed. Let us contemplate a little longer on the best solution to a tricky problem, before we embark on the destruction of our treasured landscape.

Where do you live? I live on the outskirts of Teesside, looking out on to the best view in the world, the Cleveland Hills.

Take a photo of it now, because next time you turn to look, there will be grave yard, crosses everywhere. I for one prefer the living natural world.

What would you rather have?

JANET BAINBRIDGE Seamer, Middlesbrough.

Ms Bainbridge, are you willing to pay to have wind turbines sited a hundred miles offshore? Do you have any comprehension of what that would cost?
