Teenager attacked on way home from club

A TEENAGER was subjected to a serious sex attack outside a nightclub, police have revealed.

The 18-year-old woman was assaulted close to the Cactus Jacks club in Commercial Street, Darlington, County Durham, in the early hours of Saturday morning as she made her way home following a night out with friends.

A Durham Constabulary spokesman said the victim has been left 'deeply traumatised' by the assault and an appeal has been made for witnesses to come forward.

The teenager left the Escapade nightclub in Gladstone Street at about 12.35am, where she had been enjoying an evening with pals, before making her way across the Kendrew Street car park, through an underpass and into the Commercial Street car park.

She was attacked at the side of the club, also in Commercial Street.

It is understood she made contact with a friend, who met up with her in Darlington centre and then raised the alarm by telling officers in the street.

The whole area was sealed off by police, who brought in a crime scenes investigation team to carry out a detailed search of the area, and officers are now studying CCTV footage.

Last night, police released a description of her assailant, who is said to be a white male, around 5ft to 5ft 4ins tall, with a Southern accent.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Nail, the officer leading the inquiry, said police were hoping to carry out a full interview with the victim. So far, they have only been able to conduct a brief interview in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He said: "We are currently studying close circuit television footage in the area.

"Hopefully that, along with the thorough forensic examination of the scene, will provide us with important evidence."

Police want witnesses to come forward, and ask members of the public who were in the area between midnight and 1am to get in touch.

A video interview with police talking about the incident will appear tomorrow

what do we have to do these days to feel free to live our own life safe

I don't walk my dog in quiet country lanes or pretty woodland any more, which both he and I used to love. Have to stick to busy parks or beaches now. We always hear about the rights of offenders, but what about ours? I look over my shoulder, and have to be very aware everywhere I go, and will take a detour to avoid even a small group of youths. What about our right to lead a fear-free life??

I live so close to this area that is scares me, I rarely go out on a night, and this is partly the reason why! It sickens me that a young woman cannot walk 100 metres, in a relatively busy area, at that time of night, without being subjected to an attack. I have faith that the police will catch this man. But my heart goes out to the young girl.

my heart goes out to this lass - if it's true. If it is I know she never asked for it but 18 walking through the underpass and a deserted car park at that time of the morning?? There have been instances in the past in the town lasses making this up, going out with next to nothing on and coming on to lads and than changing their mind. Don't slag the town off till you know exactly what happened. Oh and by the way, before you start slating me for my opinion I am a woman that goes out drinking in the town every week

I'm a 46 year old woman, and also go drinking in town every weekend, but there's no way I would I walk home alone at the time of night. I don't know what it's going to take for women to realise they just can't do it. If it was my daughter, walking home alone at that time of night, I would go of it with her, but then I know my daughter wouldn't do it.
I feel for the lass,it's an awful thing to happen to anyone, but you just don't do it!

This is so unfortunate. But she should have been home at that part of the night or at least been with group of friends. I don't think she'll ever venture out again alone like this. Pity this kind of thing has to happen for someone to learn the hard facts of life. Then they spend the rest of their lives cursing everyone.
