Returning the extra day

STAFF and councillors from Richmondshire District Council have offered to put the "extra" day this leap year to good use.

More than 40 people from the local authority have volunteered to swap their day jobs for some work in the community, to "give back" the day gained on February 29, 2008.

Richmondshire residents and organisations are now being asked to nominate community projects that could benefit from a bit of "muscle" - anything from clearing an overgrown garden to tidying up a street.

Ideally, the work should take place in September, and should not require any specialist equipment or training.

Nomination forms are available on the council's website, at www.richmondshire.gov.uk.

Alternatively, telephone communications manager Tom Stirling on 01748 827029.
