‘Lost’ Tyneside songs launch museum music


THE Friends of the Bowes Music Group has assembled a programme to appeal to all tastes.

The season starts on March 13 with Concert Royal, an ensemble with performs “lost”

traditional vocal music from Victorian Tyneside, accompanied by historical instruments.

Concert Royal received Heritage Lottery funding to revive and promote such music.

In April, the Vacation Chamber Orchestra plays music by Vivaldi and other composers.

The orchestra comprises current or former students of the UK’s top conservatoires and universities who are at the start of their professional careers.

Barnard Castle School Choral Society returns in May with a popular choral concert featuring Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass, written in 1855 and scored for large orchestra and soloists. It also includes popular operatic favourites for choir and soloists.

In July, the Friends group celebrates its 60th anniversary with a gala concert at which the Young Sinfonia will play music from the six decades of its existence.

Rising pianist Catherine Leonard makes her debut at the museum in September, playing pieces from the classical and romantic periods, including works by Beethoven and Schumann.

Ticket prices remain unchanged this year: £12, £10 for Friends, accompanied under-16s free, except for the gala concert, £17.50/£15 for Friends.
