Beauty of the natural world inspires botanical lines

TEN artists and makers explore the natural world in Botanical – Orchids, Honesty Quilts and Birdhouses at the Lund Gallery at Easingwold, near Thirsk.

The exhibition, which opens on Sunday, features ceramics, textiles and paintings celebrating all things that grow from the ground. It continues until September 6.

Bold ceramics by Lisa Katzenstein, whose style is inspired by post-war British abstract art and design of the 1950s and 1960s, complement contemporary large-scale botanical images on canvas and paper by David Campbell and paintings of orchids by Malcolm Whittaker.

Campbell’s interest in the natural world has always underpinned his paintings, which are about surface texture, gesture and alchemy.

Whittaker is both artist and plantsman. Originally from Barnsley, he studied at the Royal College of Art and tends to work in series, working on variations of the same theme over many years.

Honesty seeds and pods are sewn into the fabric of the Studio Quilt by textile artist Pauline Burbidge, who describes her work as “a little like a painting in fabric inspired by the natural world”.

The theme extends to the jewellery showcases, including pod earrings and sycamore brooches, among work by other artists in a range of media.

The gallery is open from Thursday to Saturday, 11am-5pm, Sundays, noon-4pm, or by appointment.
