Bands will strike up at the Bowes

A DAY of good-natured competition and camaraderie is on the cards at the annual Teesdale Brass Band Contest on Sunday, which takes place from 11am-4pm in the grounds of the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle.

First held in 1987, the tournament was devised by the late David Nicholson as a way of keeping the tradition of banding alive in the dale, and usually attracts about 2,000 brass band enthusiasts.

The first contest was held in a field near Eggleston, later progressing to Middleton in Teesdale, before moving to the museum four years ago.

Bands from all over the region are invited to compete.

They include Stanhope, Middleton in Teesdale, Houghton, Craghead and Aycliffe and Brancepeth bands, among others.

A parking charge of £5 per vehicle will help fund future contests. This will be refunded to those visiting the museum.
