Nissan to create 800 jobs at North-East plant

NISSAN is creating 800 jobs at its North-East plant due to overwhelming demand for its Qashqai model, it announced today.

The Japanese firm is adding a third production shift at its Sunderland plant.

Hundreds of temporary workers will also be offered permanent jobs, the company announced.

The increase in production will also create more than 400 permanent jobs in Nissan's North-East supply chain.

Trevor Mann, senior vice president of Nissan Europe, said: "This is a tremendously positive move by Nissan and represents a great vote of confidence both in the success of Qashqai, and in the Sunderland workforce who achieved a record production year in 2007."
