Historic England – formerly English Heritage – has just produced a sumptuous book of 1,300 photographs of old England taken from its archives.
The bigger towns and cities, like Newcastle and York, get the best show, but there's a good smattering of pictures from places like Richmond, Darlington and the North Yorkshire coast.
And amazingly, these 100-year-old photos are perfectly pinsharp.
Above we have Bedale Market Place in 1907, with not a car in sight and a tall wall around Bedale Hall, and, right, is a magnificent view of Low Petergate, York, in about 1896 with the minster in the background.
Lost England 1870-1930 by Philip Davies is published by Atlantic Publishing for £45.
