OUR main picture from our archive shows a rural scene in Danby Wiske, a village near Northallerton, taken in December 1936.

It coincides with Mrs E Smith, of Northallerton, kindly sending in this picture of Danby Wiske station, as she lived there from 1936 to 1950.

The station was on the East Coast Main Line north of Northallerton and was open from 1884 to 1958. It was a little way outside the village at what was once a level crossing although now a high bridge takes the lane over the line.

The station has gone and only the railway cottages on the west side of the line remain.

It must have been a curious little halt in the middle of nowhere, presumably to serve the agricultural interests in the area. If you have any information about it, please email chris.lloyd@nne.co.uk
