Here's a beautifully bucolic picture of an old chap taking a cup of tea to the harvesters in front of Easby Abbey on July 10, 1962.

A brownie point for anyone who can identify the tractor.

Last week, people were identifying the cars in Northallerton High Street in April 1962.

Darlington and Stockton Times:

Dennis Exelby of Crakehall, Ian Anderson of Bedale, Chris Robson of Pickhill, Mick Faulkner of Hutton Rudby and Edward Brown of Low Row were among the early birds to get in touch, along with David Yeadon of Boldron, near Barnard Castle, who added some pithy comments.

From left to right: Morris Oxford – "like an overgrown Morris Minor, pretty dull to drive," said David; Austin Cambridge – "the oil filter was a real pain to change"; VW Beetle; Triumph Mayflower – "baby version of the much better Triumph Renown. The Mayflower had a puny little side valve engine, and really was pretty hopeless". Mark Cooper of Darlington pointed out that the Mayflower was registered in Ireland.

The sixth car was the most controversial. About half of our correspondents thought, like David, that it was a Vauxhall Velox – "I think it lacks the chrome overload of the flashy Cresta", he said. The other half thought it was a Cresta.

Fortunately, we have an arbitrator. Peter Cowton, who farms at Cundall near Boroughbridge, said: "It is a Cresta without a shadow of doubt. I passed my test in that car four days before Christmas in 1962.

"WPY 545 was my dad's car, Reg Cowton, a farmer up Nether Silton. He would buy it new from Walkers in South Otterington, who were a Vauxhall dealer. It was a bloody good car. It was blue, and when he bought it, it had white walled tyres – we thought he was an American gangster."

Many thanks for all the positive comments, and there'll be more old cars in the near future.

Honorary mentions also to Duncan Hamilton of Northallerton, Gerry Simpson of Darlington, Gerald Burnett of Richmond, Ken Hannah of Guisborough, Ian Gravestock of Yarm, Tom Banfield of Thornton-le-Beans, Maureen Dawes of Newton-le-Willows, John Weighell of Neasham, Patricia Robinson of Kirby Fleetham, Dave Wallwork of Richmond, John Burton of Stokesley, Michael Waldman of Worton, and Derek Noble of Hutton Rudby.
