NEWCASTLE city centre is a monumental sprawl with more than 240 listed buildings in the Grainger Town area alone.

Other monuments and buildings add to the city’s rich and colourful history, some notable examples being Grey’s Monument, a 40m high monument to the second Earl Grey, the iconic bridges that cross the River Tyne, close to the city centre, St James’ Park, which is the home of Newcastle United Football Club, and the medieval castle, which gives the city its name.

The Northern Echo’s archives hold a wide variety of pictures of the city, but these ones caught my eye.
