Beauty on the farm

THE search is on to find Britain’s most beautiful farm – but the panel of celebrity judges and farming experts is not just looking for lovely views and picture-postcard farmyards.

James Martin, celebrity chef and judge, said: “Farming is a serious business and we’re looking at their business models and profitability as well.”

The Beautiful Farm Awards are run by Farm Business magazine in conjunction with New Holland. Previous winners have ranged from Northumberland to Devon.

Alan Whibley, magazine publisher, said: “It’s the farmers that are keeping the countryside looking good. They look after livestock, repair miles of dry stone walls, hedges and fencing, plant wildflower meadows to encourage insects and wildlife.”

“They manage waterways, woodlands, paths and bridleways – and ultimately, they put food on our table, something that is becoming more and more critical to all of us.

“In what we describe as a beautiful farm, many of these things may be happening. We’re looking for a rounded view of farming but a recognition of the role that farmers play in keeping the countryside attractive.”

Andrew Watson, business director of New Holland Agricultural Commercial Operations for the UK and Ireland, said: “The farming community conducts one of the most complex and sophisticated asset management and maintenance operations imaginable: it looks after our countryside.

To enter, farms should contact 01892-861664, or email awards@ghpublishing.co.uk, before October 9; entry is free. The winner will be announced in the House of Lords and will win a trip to Italy, courtesy of New Holland.
