Gluten-free kitchen wins 2008 national award


THE Gluten Free Kitchen at Hawes has won the national Foods Matter Free-From 2008 award for the best gluten-free cake, muffin or pudding.

Sue Powell, who created the prize winning cake, was unable to attend the award ceremony at Antony Worrall Thompson's Notting Grill in London on May 21.

At the ceremony, her coffee and walnut sponge was described by the judges as a lovely homemade cake, with a good coffee flavour and lovely texture and consistency.

Ms Powell began her business by experimenting with cake and pudding recipes in her own kitchen. She successfully launched it at the Dales Festival of Food and Drink in 2005 and returns every year now to sell her mouth-watering creations.

The packaging of her products has just been revamped thanks to the design centre at Sunderland University and a grant from the Food Processing Faraday Partnership. Her new logo is of wheat being thrown out of a golden circle.
