DAMP weather failed to deter more than 23,400 people attending Northumberland County Show on Bank Holiday Monday.

They were treated to a fine show at Bywell, near Stocksfield, which included more than 350 cattle, 470 sheep, 130 alpacas, 600 horses and thousands of dogs, pigs, goats, rabbits and Guinea pigs.

Sybil and George MacPherson, who featured in the BBC series "This Farming Life" travelled from Dalmally in Scotland to judge the coveted "Champion of champions" trophy.

The award went to "Glittered", a magnificent Limousin cow with calf at foot from Messrs Jenkinson of Clifton Moor, Penrith.

The reserve was "Marleycote Sea Lily 23rd", a two-year-old Ayrshire from Richard Baynes of Slaley, enjoying only her second show. She will next compete at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

Neil Slack from Newby, near Penrith, took the commercial beef championship with Rio, his 16-month-old home-bred Limousin cross who was champion calf at Smithfield at Christmas, and reserve champion heifer at Beef Expo.

The reserve commercial beef champion was "Gunslinger" from G&J Sedgewick of Bishop Auckland.

The champion sheep was Corrawally, a superb Beltex from Henry Jewitt of Romaldkirk who earlier won the any other continental and interbreed championships.
