A TOP price of £3,200 was achieved at the Yorkshire Holstein Club’s second show and sale of pedigree and commercial entries at Skipton mart.

The lead figure was for a young dairy bull from the Moorhouse family’s Aireburn herd in Bell Busk, while the supreme champion was a newly-calven heifer from the Fort family’s Silmoor herd on Silsden Moor.

Brian and Judith Moorhouse dominated the show class for bulls with two classy entries.

Their top price second-prize bull was home-bred Aireburn Saturn, a 12-month-old by the Genus sire, De-Su Navarro, out of Aireburn Fever Stephanie. He sold to Robert Metcalfe, of Brearton, Otley.

They also had the first-prize bull, Aireburn Sharpe. The 11-month-old was home-bred by the Genus dairy bull, Cookiecutter Harper, and from the Aireburn Scilla family. He sold for £2,000 to David and Dee Holmes, of Castley, Otley.

Father and daughter, Edward and Georgie Fort, won their first dairy title at the venue with their first-prize newly-calven heifer, Silmoor Medallion Susan, a December, 2014, home-bred by their own Medallion stock bull, a Picston Shottle son.

The dam was Silmoor Legend Susan, who gave more than 14,500 litres across two previous lactations.

Calved for 21 days and giving 27 litres, the victor made £1,800 when bought by Alf and Andrew Townsend, of Southfield, Burnley.

Female runner-up was the Moorhouses newly-calven heifer Aireburn Lineman Bowe. A March 2015-born daughter of the Semex sire, Comestar Lineman, she was 22 days calved and giving 29 litres. She topped the heifer section when sold for £1,950 to the Sowray brothers, of Bishop Thornton.

The sale had a strong turnout of 42 head of dairy cattle, with buyers from as far away as Sussex.
