THE English National Sheepdog Trials are returning to Yorkshire after an absence of nine years.

Thousands of enthusiasts are expected to flock to Castle Howard next week for three days of action-packed competition from Friday to Sunday. (August 5th – 7th).

Some of the best dogs and biggest names in sheepdog trialling will compete to win one of 15 places in the national team and go on to represent England in the International Trials in Wales later in the year.

Ian Murdoch, a full time working shepherd in Ryedale who has qualified for the England team twice before, is hoping to get a good run with his two dogs, eight year–old Bob and four year–old Ben.

He said: "Both are capable of doing it. It’d be great to do it again, the last time was in 2000, and it’d be all the better to qualify here in Yorkshire amongst friends and family."

Originating from Hawes, Mr Murdoch was inspired by his father who competed locally, but it wasn’t until he became a full time shepherd at Fridlington Farms, near Malton, 30 years ago, that he became a serious trialist.

Sheep numbers on the farm have increased to around 3000 ewes, and having good working dogs is a must. His passion has passed to his daughter, Rachel, who competed in the Young Handlers competition at the International Trial in Ireland three years ago.

He said: "Perhaps it was being born at lambing time and going to her first trial at two months of age."

Along with other members of Ryedale Sheepdog Society Mr Murdoch has been heavily involved in setting up the English National – he is chief sheep steward – as well as local sheepdog trials at Malton, Ryedale and Thornton Dale.

The event also includes family activities and attractions including a craft and demonstration marquee on Saturday & Sunday, featuring the Cleveland Fibre art group with spinning weaving and felting; traditional stick makers; a children’s tent and bouncy castle, and a "Handlers Corner" – where visitors can talk to the experts and find out about their dogs.

The Freedom of Spirit for Border Collies Trust will also give an insight into the breed, their history, behaviour and training.

Alec Mosey, local chairman of the 2016 English National Sheepdog Trials, said: "We are very proud to host the event once again in Yorkshire and could not think of a more stunning backdrop to our venue than the historic and world-famous Castle Howard.

"As well as the Trials, we have ensured that there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy and visitors can get a discounted entry to Castle Howard too."

The event runs from 7.30am to 5pm. Entry costs £5 for adults, children 16 and under free. See englishnationalsheepdogtrials.org.uk .
