TOP prices were paid and records set at the annual Limousin Red Ladies Derby and weaned calf sales at Borderway mart, Carlisle, on Friday.

Three-year-old Brockhurst Howzat from WJ & M Mash Ltd, of Chesham, Bucks, was female champion and then sold for the day's top price of 24,000gns top price. Oddacres Lemmy, a March 2015-born bull calf from AJ Mason, of Odd Acres Farm, Skipton, later made the venues weaned calf record of 10,000gns.

Howzat is by Wilodge Vantastic and out of Brockhurst Bolshoi the 2014 Royal Highland breed champion.

Described as one of the best females bred in the Brockhurst herd, the first calver was sold Pd’d in calf to Ardglasson Highlander the 2013 Scottish Limousin Grand Prix Champion.

She was bought by Aileen Ritchie, of Whitecairns, Aberdeenshire, who also bought Goldies Inchantress, the reserve champion from Bruce Goldie, Dumfries.

She said: "Both the champion and reserve have tremendous breed character and a depth of bloodlines to work with that will give me great options. They are both full of quality and are terrific foundation females to start and build a herd around."

Overall, 25 Red Ladies sold to average £4,268 – up £1,051 on the year for five more sold.

In the following Limousin weaned calf sale, a new breed record for the venue was set when Oddacres Lemmy, a March-born bull calf, was the first to be offered at a society sale by Gallois a French-bred bull. After spirited bidding, he was purchased by James Cooper for his Tomschoice pedigree herd at Dacre, Harrogate.

Millgate Lucy from Michael Loughran, Cookstown, made the top heifer price of 7,500gns when purchased jointly by John Richardson, of Dufton, Appleby, and G & JA Sedgewick, of Newton Aycliffe.

Willie Barron, of Burnhope made 6,000gns when selling his January-born Barrons Lumberjack to JN Swinbank, of Neasham, Darlington. Lumberjack is by Wilodge Cerberus out of the Ampertaine Commander daughter Barrons Hopeful.

At 5,000gns the bull calf Saunders Lualua from A&W Watson, of Brampton, Cumbria, was bought by R & IA Watson, of Woodland, Bishop Auckland.
