DAIRY farmers have the opportunity to hear about ways of reducing costs and improving business efficiency.

The NFU and AHDB Dairy are to hold a free seminar in Northallerton which will give producers an opportunity to hear from fellow farmers that have embarked on a range of business development projects.

Andrew Leggott and Roger Hildreth will talk about "calf to calving" experiences, outlining best practice from the moment a calf is born through to when she has her first calf two years later.

Angus Gaudie and Joe Dugdale will focus on soil and grassland management, exploring how management techniques can differ to achieve optimum forage for cows.

Gwyn Jones, chairman of AHDB Dairy, will discuss future priorities for the industry and Andrew Suddes, from Promar, will explore what skills and abilities will be needed by successful dairy farmers in the future.

There will also be a chance to find out more about the Prince’s Dairy Initiative which was launched in 2012 to offer a package of business advice and support to vulnerable dairy businesses.

Laurie Norris, North East regional dairy adviser, said: "Faced with continuing low milk prices, the dairy sector is looking to make cost savings wherever possible. A lot of work has been done in this area – but the knowledge and experience gained needs to be shared as widely as possible.

"This event is designed to provide practical insights, with some of those involved in AHDB’s 'monitor farm' programme talking candidly about the changes they made and the benefits delivered. I hope this will prove a timely session for all regional dairy farmers as they plan for the year ahead."

The seminar will be at the Golden Lion Hotel on Thursday, January 7, from 11am to 2.30pm with lunch provided. To book call the NFU regional office on 01904 451550 or email north.east@nfu.org.uk giving your contact details.
