TEENAGE brother and sister Luke and Beth Wilkinson took the reserve supreme championship title at Countryside Live in Harrogate.

Rapturous applause and cheers greeted the decision by judge Mike Dickens of Milton Keynes.

Earlier Luke, 14, and Millie, his 16 month-old 580kg home bred British Blue cross, had won the Yorkshire bred, owned and shown championship title.

Luke, who was also runner-up in the young handlers beef section, said the day had been "amazing."

He and Beth, 16, from Leyburn, have had a highly successful show season with Millie, and their other cattle including reserve commercial champion at the Great Yorkshire, and the commercial and interbreed champion at Stokesley show.

They will compete with her at Border Agri-Expo, Carlisle, on Friday, October 30, and also at the English Winter Fair and Smithfield.

The supreme beef champion went to Sally Lloyd, from Leominster, with Minion, her British Blue cross champion heifer. The 14 month-old weighs 495kg and will be going to Smithfield and the Welsh Winter Fair.

Other local winners included Clair Cropper and John Melling of Long Preston, Skipton, took the Any Other Continental title and reserve Continental breed sired beast with with Millhouse Magic.

Mark Harriman and Sarah Warriner of Pickering won the champion heifer sired by a British Limousin with the 580-kg Red Hot Honey which they bought in January and which has won five other titles this season.

Judge Mike Dickens praised the quality of the cattle he had seen throughout the weekend but said he liked small cattle – not big – and looked for them to be showy and full of meat, ideal for the family butcher.

Work on a new £10m exhibition hall meant the cattle were moved to the ring and sheds normally used for the Great Yorkshire Show and, with the area under canvas, the system worked well.
